Day 1
Theme: From the Hasmoneans to Herod; three-hundred years of Jerusalem Freedom, Occupation, and Tyranny in the Second Temple Period
Logistics:
- Time: 08:00am - 16:30 (4:30pm).
- Starting Location: Armon HaNatziv, Goldman Promenade in Talipot
- Ending Location: Davidson Center/Jerusalem Archaeological Park at the Dung Gate
- Food: Bring money for lunch and snacks. Lots of eateries to choose from among the shops of Jerusalem's Old City
- Requirements: Bible, hat, water, backpack, good walking shoes, money for events that include site entrances, parking, and National Park fees (details on registration).
- Transportation: city bus and/or private taxi to get from Armon HaNatziv to the Dung Gate
Research Topics and Areas of Study:
- - South to north overview of the ancient City of David and the Old City of Jerusalem, including orientations to the east and the west. Scripture refs include: Psalm 125:2 and Psalm 122:3.
- - Mount of Olives to the Temple Mount, studying about the role of the mountain in history and in prophecy, including Zechariah 14:1-4; Genesis 2 and 22; Luke 21:37; Acts 1:10-12.
- - Old City (Jewish Quarter) walking tour to the Burnt House and the Wohl Archaeological Museum.
- - Underground Jerusalem from King Solomon to King Herod (pending an advance reservation and available time)
- - Davidson Center and Jerusalem Archaeological Park, which includes ancient "Main Street" Jerusalem; the Southern Steps ascent to the Temple Mount
Day 2
Theme: Jebusite Fortress to the Eternal Capital of all Israel: eight-hundred years in the ancient City of David
Logistics:
- Time: 08:00am - 16:30 (4:30pm)
- Starting Location: Entrance to the City of David
- Ending Location: Entrance to the City of David
- Food: Pack your own picnic lunch or bring money to buy lunch and snacks, as needed
- Requirements: Bible, hat, water, flashlight or headlamp, good walking shoes, water shoes for the wet tunnel, water shorts, small backpack, money for entrance fees that include 3D film and National Park (details on registration).
- Transportation: none required
Research Topics and Areas of Study:
Beit HaTzofeh at the ancient city's northernmost lookout gazing south over the Kidron Valley and the ancient City of David; "As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so YHWH surrounds His people from this time forth and forever" (Psalm 125:2).
- -3D film presentation about the City of David from biblical days to modern times
- Large Stepped-Stone Structure and the remains of what has been identified as David's Palace - 2 Samuel 5:11
- The Royal Quarter, House of the Bullae, the Burnt Room, Nehemiah's Wall - A study of the historical events leading up to and including the sacking of ancient Jerusalem in the days of Nebuchadnezzer, King of Babylon. Biblical passages of study include - Jeremiah 38:1-4; 1 Chronicles 15:1; 2 Kings 25:8-9; Jeremiah 32:14; Nehemiah 3:33-35.
- Ancient Tombs Lookout. A full examination of the Kidron Valley in its history and prophecy and the story of Jerusalem's high official Shebnayahu as referenced in Isaiah 22:15-16.
- The Warrens Shaft Water System, the Secret Tunnel of the Jebusites, and the Water Pipe ("Tzinor") that David's men used to conquer the Jebusite city and its fortress - 2 Samuel 5:6-8
- Hezekiah's Tunnel (underground water channel) - 2 Chronicles 32:4) and the Gihon Spring - John 7:37-39.
- The Spring House with its massive stone fortifications and defense walls; plus, the Canaanite Pool, the walls of ancient Jerusalem, the Tombs of the House of David, and the Shiloah Pool (Isaiah 22:9 and John 9:1-7).
